Mesopotamia (now Syria), 4th millennium BC

Mesopotamia (now Syria), 4th millennium BC

These figurines were excavated in the 30s of the former century, at Tell Brak, now North-East Syria, it used to be the ancient city of Nagar. Once, a temple was situated at the site and it appears that these “eye idols” were given as offerings, as thousands of them have been found. Hence the temple is called “the Eye Temple”. But what do the geometric depictions mean?

Our ancestors were clearly aware of  the polarity of Yin and Yang that is responsible for creation  and they knew that this polarity therefore existed in every human being too. But contrast to “modern” mankind they still had the awareness that keeping a conscious balance between the two in the inner and outer world, was of utmost importance to the community. They expressed it by means of the two triangles, geometric representations of the creative principle (Trinity) in mankind. Yes! We are creators too, after all: “Thou art made in my image” says the bible and this Mesopotamian figurine said the same without written words long before the bible appeared in history. Mankind though during the involutionary journey started creating from the lower triangle only by using the self-serving ego and lost connection to the inner, upper triangle.

The single striped upward pointed triangle of the figurine on the left, represented the Yang pole (positive, consciousness, outward directed), the double striped (duality) downward triangle represented the Yin pole (negative, receiving, inward directed, unconscious, energy). The double lines at the base of the left figurine refer to the duality that reigns in the realm of the physical, Earth. Geometrically Earth is depicted as a square.

In the world view of the artist who made these figurines Yin and Yang were clearly partners in creation, hence the two pair of eyes. The Universe was considered to be the big womb from the Great Mother, Goddess, bestowing humanity with her abundance when balance was kept in the whole. Mother God was a powerful and mysterious Lady. These two little artefacts were not only meant for the females of the community, men and women alike held this Path of return to the Goddess as an ideal worth striving for as both sexes owed their life to the Goddess.  Later on in history when people started forgetting about the necessity of keeping a balance and chose in favor of the ego propelled Yang, the  positive pole  was labeled as being “male” and “good” and the  negative pole as “female” and as “bad”. When literacy and monotheistic religions entered our world, Holy Books appeared which omitted that the two creational forces or poles could not create balance without each other. The Yang pole remained in the conscious awareness as a mirror of what was happening in the society of those days and that pole was named Father, God the Father. God the Mother went into oblivion from now on, the Yin pole retreated deep within, also in the human beings. That is why the female figurines are black, she is hidden in the unconsciousness of mankind. The late Mary Daly said:” If God is male, then male is God” and so it was. The world was being built on imbalanced and distorted energies, the symbols of the Inner Teachings became words, the words that held symbolic content were taken literally, religions built their dogmas on them, women did not have access to literacy and males and in the end also females had forgotten who they were, that they needed each other to maintain balance in the world and therefore had become opponents instead of each other’s partners in creation. Mankind had almost lost the connection to Mother Earth and the Great Mother, the Divine Yin. The creative triangle of today is based on Yang with distorted Yin in the triangle of Money, Power and Sex but the world is changing rapidly….

The Inner Teachings tell us that we create from our belief system i.e. the un-conscious beliefs, so the content of our consciousness, what is in our minds, creates what we will perceive and  what we then will encounter in our individual reality but also in our world, because we are all connected. If we encounter recurrent painful events in our lives it is a sign for our inner awareness that some issue in our personality wants to reveal itself to us, to broaden our consciousness and therefore the consciousness of all humans. It is an opportunity that we have somehow created  in order to balance our inner energies on the lower 3 dimensional levels of our being, represented in the statuette on the left hand side by the downward pointed  dual triangle. It shows that our ancestors in the 4th millennium BC had awareness of the different levels of consciousness and dimensions within the human being. The dimensions of time and space are depicted by the curves of the hips of these female figurines and also by the widening square base of the white figurine (link). Our ancestors knew that we are in a dimension where there is a “curve” that is responsible for time.  21st century science is just beginning to touch on the dimensions with quantum and string theory. When scientists try to reconcile Einstein’s relativity theory with quantum theory they seem to exclude each other but they are reconcilable in a strange way; in that way time does not exist!  Lately, scientists at CERN in Switzerland werre baffled by the outcome of an experiment that shattered the corner stone of physics; that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. But subatomic particles , neutrino’s did just that! It would mean that in principle one could be able to travel back in time. This is what the Inner Teachings always have been teaching for thousands of years…..

The same figurine also shows that there is a gap between the downward and upward pointed triangle. The inner Teachings tell us that we can “bridge” that gap between our lower and higher self by using our positive intention, focus, and our adult ego (Yang) to clear our consciousness from childhood blocks that keep us imprisoned in repeating again and again the same kind of situations in our lives.

This little but heavy artifact on the left represents the individual living in his world of duality and conveys to us that the recommended choice for acting is made from the Higher Self, the upward pointed,  single striped triangle. This is made clear by the two deeply pierced holes at the location of the hands. It states that having the consciousness, received by the Higher Self in the acting hands is Divine Manifestation on Earth, the Divine purpose, only then do we, as human beings, create from the Unity of Self. Unity is depicted by the single stripe of the upper triangle in contrast to duality of the double striped downward pointed triangle. It expresses that the human being, during hers/his existence on Earth, has a choice whether to create from the downward pointed triangle and adding to duality or from the upward pointed triangle and “escaping reality”, in which way no helpful contribution is made on Earth as it can not be grounded. The keyword is again “balance” and integration of the two triangles and it was depicted in a symbol that appears in many cultures, the rhombus or diamond. To achieve this we need to do the inner work on ourselves. It is exactly in this balanced state that the 4th  /5th  dimension can “unveil” itself to us and in Barbara Brennan’s healing model it is called “localized Divinity” , the Core Star localized above our belly button, after we have crossed the gap between the two triangles on the left figurine and made the “re-connection” in Latin “re-ligare” between the two triangles: this has always been the real meaning of the word “religion”. Then we will have constructed a rhombus form that we will see more often in this website, which indicates that this geometric symbol refers to the same principle of the Inner Teachings all over the world.

The other black figurine shows us how to find our way back to Unity, to Father and Mother God.  At the bottom is a geometric depiction of the increasing density of the earthly dimensions; three squares and a fourth one, represented by dots in four quarters. The dots indicate that this dimension is not manifested, not visible to the human sense of eye sight. It is here that the human being though can reconnect to his true identity. The energy in the higher regions of this dimension is called the Christ consciousness, or Buddhi and in the human being it corresponds within the heart area of the human physical body, chakra 4.

The geometric pattern looks like a helicopter view depicted in a two- dimensional way ( for three dimensional view link ). The three dimensions have been brought up towards the fourth that is shown as a clear boundary closing off the lower dimensions, it is the Veil that separates us from knowing our true identity and that shrouds the human heart and Soul. We can only lift it when we open our heart and feel and see with the heart……

By tracing back the Inner Teachings on ancient artifacts these depiction of balance within the 3 and finding Unity in the 4 and resting within 5 (the axis) while living in a physical body, we are able to establish the fact that the depiction of the Inner Teachings  is a recurrent theme throughout history until this day. When I started my quest to find more evidence in history about the Inner Teachings I entered into a world that was permeated with the Divine, the world our ancestors lived in was entirely regarded as Sacred Space and everything in it had meaning. Theirs was a world of magic in which the Divine was recognized as being in everything and in every ”body”. Of course our ancestors still resided within a world of duality that presented them with many difficulties but there was an awareness that balance was to be sought within the individual first and the Divine would then always be within reach in hard times. The Divine was tended to on a regular basis with temples erected for Goddesses and Gods, as the energetic forces of Creation and priestesses and priests  performed their duties and skills in service of the Goddess or God they were assigned to. Balance was not only necessary on the horizontal level on Earth but also on the vertical axis (symbol of the Cross, crucifix) that connected Mother Earth to her Divine Counterpart in the heavens and it started within each individual.

The deeply pierced prominent “eyes” in both black figurines depict the inner consciousness of the individual, the “stone. The base is solid stone, consciousness here is un-consciousness. Whoever has done the inner work on himself, who has seen within, lifts the stone weight (karma) and has set the spirit free from the prison of matter, unconsciousness; the eyes will “see”….. We will see that “black stones” have been the focus of many rituals in antiquity (link Saudi-Arabia, link)and they still are today.
